Finally getting around to digesting all of the images shot from this Summer X Games in LA. Wow. I cannot believe that the grand total of information shot exceeds 80 gigs of images. It's always a whirlwind tour but so much fun and challenging to make pictures that not only tell the story of the games but make them somewhat unique as well. Don't know how unique they are but certainly tells the story in my mind. I shot so much that I want to share so I'm planning on a multiple day posting of images. Here is the start. Molly's 30th Birthday

Another year passes as my beautiful wife Molly officially enters her 31st year of life. Most guys might be timid about printing their wife's actual age in fear of retaliation, but Molly is so much cooler than the rest. The number one reason she is so fantastic is because of her tolerance towards my constant picture taking. I may have to get one of those "I love my wife" stickers I've seen around town to put on the back of my Jeep. Yeah, she'll appreciate that I'm sure. My brother Jason got to experience it all first hand as well during his maiden voyage out west to drink in the Rocky Mountain air. I always love watching people watch mountainous scenery for the first time. I strive for that same appreciation no matter how many times it has been seen. Cheers to both of you guys for a fantastic weekend. Keep checking back because I am headed off today for L.A. to document life at the always extreme Summer X Games.

Colorado Velodrome

To continue what has accidentally become a long-term documentary on cycling culture in Colorado I decided to head down to Colorado Springs last evening to start documenting the Seven Eleven Velodrome. Track Cycling amazes me and keeps me thinking as fast as these cyclists are going. The light was beautiful and I hope to make it back this summer to round off my coverage of this particular facet of cycling. If anyone has any unique cycling ideas for this documentary please feel free to drop me a line and let me know. There could be a free lunch involved if so. Team Transplant

I've been working on a number of projects,weddings, and various other work that is under restriction from publication which is why the blog has gone dormant for nearly a month. This particular project with the American Transplant Foundation was particularly exciting because they gave me the green light to produce and audio show from their first ride with Team Transplant at the annual Elephant Rock Bicycle Race in Castle Rock,Colorado a few weeks back. This is what I'm hoping to explore more of with non-profits and various other clients in the near future to bring a voice to images in order to have more impact upon donors and potential donors. Gunnison Gorge

A recent trip took me down a river I've yet to explore. The Gunnison River just outside of the Black Canyon National Park is an abundant trout fishery which recently received permanent protection by the National Landscape Conservation System. Currently, the NLCS encompasses about 27 million acres of public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. On a side note, the word around town is that the salmon fly hatch is the most impressive site to see and fish. Hopefully I can make a trip back to make pictures and possibly wet my line a little too. Enjoy.

Sunday morning started out with fog and a light drizzle. Should I make the effort to go up the mountain? Yes. Anywhere there are promises of people hucking themselves down the mountain on nothing but a small wooden board I'm not too far behind. The first ever Buffalo Bill Downhill Race was held on Lookout Mountain outside of Golden,Colorado Sunday afternoon. I now have a new respect for these athletes. Cheers.

It's funny. As a journalist I love to sit and watch a situation unfold right in front of my eyes. Yesterday's drug holiday event held in Civic Center Park in Denver is one I've never had the chance of witnessing. So I packed up my cameras and headed down to make some pictures of people doing what they came to do. Smoke pot in public. Interesting character study to say the least. I actually debated whether or not I should throw these up on my blog, but in the end I went as an observer and wanted to bring back images that made someone feel as if they were in the middle of it all. I hope these images do just that. Here's to me being obsessed with journalism.

After seeing some work done by a couple of photographers online with an old Kodak Duoflex camera I've recently been inspired to make some of these images myself. Last week I ordered one for twelve dollars online and decided to play around with it in my backyard the other day. I know that this is a total gimmick but it doesn't hurt to spark the creative juices once in awhile. Here's an image I made of my beloved dog Riley. I'm sure this technique will wear itself out really soon, but for the time being I am enjoying slowing down and making new images. Cheers.

I've been on a cycling kick recently. It's been filling the void as far as assignment work goes thus far. A couple of weeks I wandered to the new Boulder Velodrome to check it out. I ended up staying for two hours watching and making pictures of the masters group ride. They meet up every Thursday evening and pedal the entire time. Amazing. I plan on making a return trip in the next couple of weeks to make some more pictures. Here is the beginning. Enjoy.

Had a relaxing week and finished it up with an even more fantastic weekend. I've been doing much thinking and searching recently. I've found comfort in spending time with my very understanding and caring wife. This weekend we both became spectators of sports unheard of us. Skijoring and Mountain Bike Polo. Breath, enjoy, make pictures when I want and feel. Sounds like my new mission now. Skijoring is up first from the tiny mountain town of Leadville,CO. Bad times for the newspaper industry indeed. I'm currently attempting to digest this entire scenario right now. For as long as I have been a photojournalist I've wanted to work for the Rocky Mountain News. I've been very lucky over the last year and a half to have been given that opportunity as a freelance photographer in town. I remember walking into the photo department and meeting with Dean Krakel, the Director of Photography, and showing him my work. After nervously fumbling through my images with him I took off and thought I'd never have a chance. Minutes after meeting with him he called and asked if I would like to do a cover story on NBA superstars Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson. From that moment on I continued to push myself harder than ever as a photojournalist and it's made me who I am today. One can only dream of this sort of opportunity in their lifetime. I've learned a great deal and continue to make storytelling images on a daily basis thanks to the support of everyone on staff at the RMN. Cheers to some of the greatest people I've ever had the pleasure of working with in my small photojournalistic career. Thank you.

Last night was the first time I've shot professional hockey. I'll admit, I was a tad bit nervous because of this fact. I sat on the ice for 2 periods and took a risk moving up for the third and it payed off with the game winning goal by the Avalanche. I'd say the best piece of advice I would have to those who have never photographed this sport is to slow down and do not sweat the fact that they come flying by you at all times. Cheers.

So last night I had the pleasure to hang out at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. Lots to cover so I couldn't really make the pictures I had hoped for, but did manage to snag a few for myself prior to the bull riding start. Bull riding action isn't necessarily the story for me. I really enjoy seeing the guys reactions after they completed their 8 seconds. I'm headed back tonight for a couple of stories, but hope to have some time to find pictures that inspire myself. Spent a small amount of time over at Nene's house the other day with his fiancee Lauren Prothe. Made some images at a Nuggets game the other day and wished I had a longer lens to reach to the other end of the court where Carmello Anthony injured his hand. All I could do is make images of his reaction as he walked toward my end of the court. Nothing spectacular. I am truly looking forward to what the new year will bring for all of us. So I get a call the other day from the editors informing me that they would like me to make a simple portrait of Nuggets power forward Kenyon Martin. After I wipe the sweat already starting to accumulate from the pressure I decided to make this easy on myself and my subjects. One light, through an umbrella. That's pretty much my only lighting "trick". Goal #1 for the new year is to teach myself some more lighting skills. Quite honestly I suck at it, but I am already working on a few things for the new year which will offer me more than my one light setup. As for the picture of Kenyon and his mom Lydia Moore, it was great to have a moment within a canned two minute situation. For all the photographers out there you know how much time the media relations people usually give a photographer. Fun times. I am excited to jump in with two feet on the lighting thing. Any suggestions and tips are always a bonus.

CSU's Tim Miles

I had the opportunity the other day to spend an entire basketball game documenting just one person, Tim Miles. Mr. Miles is the enthusiastic head coach of the men's basketball team at Colorado State University. I arrived a couple of hours early to see what might be going on and to properly introduce myself to Tim. He showed an amazing range of personality throughout the game which made for some storytelling images. It ran today in the Rocky Mountain News so check it out and the audio show I did here.

Desperately Seeking Denver

A few weeks ago I was given a story I had to illustrate about the personality of Denver. This was mainly an account of the writer's experience in the Mile High City. It is now out on newsstands in 5280 Magazine so I thought that I would post some pictures that made the cut and a few others which I personally liked. The design was a little different meaning they wanted to use so many photos in such a small space. I talked with the editor who had mentioned that the pages they had allotted for the story had been cut down quite a bit. No sweat really. I just thought that I would post more here on the blog that showcased them in a larger fashion. Enjoy.

Concert photography is tough. To make an image in three songs or less is totally brutal, but also part of what I like about doing it. I guess it's a good challenge for anyone involved in photography. I hadn't shot a concert in a long, long time until Friday night's Coldplay show at the Pepsi Center. I'm not a huge fan of the photos but I did get pretty pumped when the lead singer came over to my "assigned" standing position to play to the crowd.

A couple of days ago I attended a public meeting for the Denver Public School System about the closure of several middle schools in the area. I arrived a half hour early and started looking around the room. Noticing the children in the back of the room taking a look at the agenda I decided to wander back to make some pictures of them before the meeting. After the meeting started many of them started to get visibly upset while listening to several parents speak at the podium. As a photographer we are always looking for the image which best suites telling the story accurately. When I saw the kids get upset I began to quietly make pictures of them comforting each other and then decided to back off for awhile to let them have their moment. I was not the only photographer in the room at the time making these images. Another local photographer, whom I think is a pretty good guy usually, started making images of them after I did and would not stop the entire time. I felt like he was lingering too long and not letting them have their time and space. I understand that it is a public space and he needed to make a picture but what I don't understand is why he needed to make so many. I'm positive that my pictures had the same, or hopefully better, effect without the creepiness of lingering around like this photographer had done. So that's it. I needed to get this off my chest and hopefully learn more from the experience. We need to have compassion as photojournalists. Images of sensitive nature can be documented in a better fashion.

What a great night to be a journalist and document history in the making. It was a pretty long day of coverage starting at 7 a.m. canvassing neighborhoods with McCain supporters. After the announcement was made hundreds took to the street in downtown Denver to celebrate the election of Barack Obama as our 44th president.

First Day of the Season

Well, today officially marked the start of Colorado's ski and snowboard season with the opening of Arapahoe Basin and the Loveland Ski Area. I made my way over to see what all the noise was going to be about and to claim some bragging rights as I managed to fit in a couple of turns on the first day myself. People were certainly excited about being there and taking their first runs but all in all it was mostly tame. I'm thinking of continuing the fun the entire season at the "Basin" to see what I can shake up. These photos have not found a home yet so I hoping to make some more contacts to see if they are worthy of selling to a publication. For now, enjoy. See you this season.

Workshop Videos

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of going to Jackson,Wy to produce several interview style videos of some of the world's greatest editors and photographers. These videos are simply informative in nature and could not have been done without the support and efforts of the folks at Rich Clarkson & Associates based here in Denver. Several times a year they put on The Photography at the Summit series of workshops which bring fantastic minds in photography to Wyoming to discuss and educate emerging and established photographers from throughout the country. Nikon has been a huge supporter of this new endeavor of videos which can be seen on the American Photo website as well. I hope you enjoy and get a little glimpse into the minds of so many that constantly inspire myself and many others.

Teton National Park

Last week I had the opportunity to go to Jackson,Wy to produce several short videos with some of the greatest minds in the photography field. If you want to take a look at the first of many to come please click here.
This was my first adventure in producing video in Final Cut and what a learning experience it turned out to be. Many mistakes were made which in turn made for many lessons learned for next time. I realize that the industry I am in is going the way of video and multimedia so any attempt is a positive experience. I would also like to thank coworker and workshop director Brett Wilhelm for all of his patience throughout this process. Along the way I had the chance to make pictures as well. It ranged from tourists to scenics. Here are a few from the trip. Enjoy.

This family was so fantastic. They were traveling with their teenage grandson from Arkansas on tour of several national parks. Truly a learning experience for this young man and his grandparents. Here they are having their photo taken in one of the rest stops in Teton National Park.

Prior to photographing a prep football game this week my assignment was to go to a local synagogue to document the transferring of the torah to their new facility. This was spectacular to watch as the men danced and sang their way into the new facility. I'm in Jackson,Wyoming for the week so I'm hoping to have a few updates from the colorful fall season in the Tetons.

Well, I didn't hold up to my promise of posting every day from the DNC, but that's only because I didn't totally realize that I would be working more than 15 hours in a day for the entire thing. Lesson learned. It was truly a neat experience with a mixture of events thrown my way via the editors of the Rocky Mountain News all week long. My primary goal was to make pictures surrounding the entire event. I was sent to celebrity events where I felt like a papparatzi. Then onto features on the street. From there I went to the "freedom cage." And so on. I had a feeling that would be what I was going to cover regardless all week long. It didn't bother me much as I felt quite at home roaming around the city making pictures that hopefully everyone else were not making. I am looking forward to the next opportunity I have to cover a convention to see how my style and approach changes.

Today's post begins with folks from the Boulder International Fringe Festival parading through downtown Denver. They call it an art walk in an effort to bring a different variety of art to the public. Not a word was said throughout the entire parade. Only gestures were made.

Dogapoolooza

Yesterday Molly,Riley, and I attended the annual 'Dogapoolooza' at the Berkeley Park Recreation Center in Denver. It was the last day for the pool to be open so they usually let the dogs enjoy a day. Recently, I have been big on documenting my own life and the lives of others around me. It was completely funny to watch all these dogs interact in such a different environment. Usually, Riley is at a lake, but this time she had the new challenge of figuring out how to exit the pool. Good times.

Just getting back from being completely extreme at the annual Summer X Games in Los Angeles and thought that I would post some stuff over the next few days. I've got to say that there are still little pockets of "real" moments if you look beyond the production. My two most favorite events were the women's skate competition and the amateur skate competition. It made for some really genuine moments. Hope you dig.

The annual Teva Mountain Games were underway this weekend in the beautiful mountain town of Vail,CO. Molly and I took off,despite the rising gas prices, and spent the weekend hanging out enjoying the various events. We woke up to a little snow on top of our tent and on the ground Sunday morning as well. June in Colorado!

The 30th annual Bolder Boulder 10k race was held this weekend and as a newbie to this race I found that it was completely fantastic to cover. I had the opportunity to make images for a magazine which wanted me to get the atmosphere of the race rather than the typical race coverage. This turned out to be the best way,in my opinion, to make good images at this particular race. I cannot wait until next year already. Oh the characters!

Some state girls lacrosse last night. It was a blast to shoot until the light turned from nice and flat to completely terrible. This was my second attempt at making pictures from a lacrosse game and it proved to be a challenge with only a 200mm lens. I guess you have to learn to adapt to what you are given. Enjoy.

This is one of those nice feel good stories that you just love to hear. Nick and Shane Sterner are a father and son combo who have both battled through drug addiction over the years and have found a way to inspire others to fight past their addiction as well. They founded a group called Activity Inspired Rehabilitation which helps others by encouraging them to get out and get fit to fight their addiction. A group of about 40 or so are planning on running either the full or half marathon in this weekend's Colfax Marathon in Denver, Colo. Good luck guys!

Today I had the opportunity to cover the Cinco de Mayo festivities on Federal Blvd. I enjoyed this because it wasn't the traditional festival that most people covered here in Denver. I didn't see any other photographer's all day long which is completely rare in this city. Anyway, this dude pulls up in his 1960 Chevy Impala with Mexican flags draped all over and I asked to go cruising with him and his buddy down the strip. While it didn't make for the greatest photos I felt so cool rolling around with these guys for 20 minutes or so. Enjoy.

I've been meaning to post these couple of images from my trip to the Tampa Aquarium a few weeks ago. Nothing spectacular and certainly not anything worthy of David Doubilet's eyes to see. Regardless, they are random and graphic and fit in with yesterday's aquatic theme. Now, if there were only sharks and jellyfish in the South Platte River downtown. That would be fantastic. Enjoy.

I've been meaning to post some personal work for quite some time now. I was riding the bus home last week and noticed the light was really nice down in Confluence Park. So I got off the bus as fast as possible to sprint to the park to make a few images for myself. Nothing special, just good light. Enjoy.

As a tennis player myself I cannot believe I've never noticed the complete range of emotions involved in the game. I had a blast shooting the excitement and dejection in Dallas,TX this week for the Mountain West Conference Tennis Championships. Here is a smattering of images which I thought worked. Action was pretty standard and I found that I got really bored of making the same shot over and over again. This often leads to some experimenting on my end. Enjoy.

The whirlwind tour is almost coming to a close. I went from the women's final four straight to sunny San Diego for some Moto X World Championships. What a different experience. I was mainly an editor for a small group of photographers and had the opportunity yesterday to make some images for myself. All of our stuff can be found on www.expn.com

You get the point. I've only been here one day and can't hear enough of that small phrase. It's really nice to hear everyone get behind the tournament in Tampa. Anyway, I thought that I would try my best to post at least one image from each day I'm here in sunny south Florida. This one is from when the LSU girls sat in a bunch of fancy sportscars outside of their hotel. The cars and their owners were there on behalf of some car club thing going on at the same time. It's March Madness high school style recently as teams from the area battle it out for the opportunity to be the state champions. Last night I found myself bored with the standard action shots so I worked the wide angle shot a little more than usual. It might have paid off but only with a couple of images. Be well and enjoy.

State playoffs came faster than I anticipated this year. Not much to say in the early rounds but I'm sure it will get better as the competition gets a little tougher. Right now my only problem is the teams seem to be lacking any sort of emotion. I don't understand. Off to another game in Highlands Ranch tonight. Fun times.

This Friday I had the opportunity to cover a Denver Nuggets game. The story I was sent to work on was for a feature on Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony and how they have been selected to be starters for the Western Conference All-Star game. NBA,much like most pro sports, proved tough because of the limited amount of mobility throughout the game. Overall, it was a great learning experience which I will be happy to document again. This time I will make sure not to get crushed by Iverson on the baseline. Enjoy.

Little moments are spectacular. During a special election for a city council seat in Longmont candidate Gabe Santos mingled with supporters at a private party. It was a pretty tough situation at first but after awhile folks flocked to him with kind words and hugs. I'm not saying this is the greatest image but little moments like this can turn a dull party into something unique. Enjoy.

Today was the first day lawmakers took to the state capitol for the 2008 Legislative session in Denver,CO. Lots of guys in suits acting like it was an old high school reunion. It's always fun to go and see how our government works once in awhile. The last picture pretty much sums up how I felt at certain points during the various speeches. Enjoy.

Today singer/songwriter Marc Cohn returned to Denver to perform. I was privileged to photograph him after singing a few songs on KSUV radio. I only had about two minutes to make this all happen and I knew it would be hectic. I did what I could do the day before as far as planning for the shot goes. I kept my fingers crossed the entire time. Enjoy.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to photograph Nashville-based musician Will Hoge inside the KSUV studios in Denver. Occasionally I love to get assignments in which I have absolutely no clue as to who this person is or what his music even sounds like. This simple visit with a wonderful musician has left me a fan. I am now searching itunes for his record. If I may paraphrase him a bit, he was saying that musicians today seem to feel like they are entitled to money, fame, and all the other glamor. This leaves them not focusing on the love of the music. This guy truly loves the music. Cheers.

This past weekend I was in Aspen,CO for the second annual Summit for Life snowshoe race up the hill to raise awareness for the American Transplant Foundation. I was a pleasure to meet Olympic snowboarder and local Aspenite Chris Klug. It was as much fun as it was work. Between lighting conditions,dumping snow, and busting my butt up the hill I can say that it was the most fun I've had on an assignment in a long time. He had a liver transplant several years ago and continues to raise awareness all while training for the next winter Olympics in Brittish Columbia.

A little town north of Boulder called Lyons hosts the famous Rockygrass festival every year. Today I went there to photograph Annie who is the director for the High Street Concert Series which is an attempt at bringing small Americana and Bluegrass bands to the town. Enjoy.

A little CU women's hoops update. I actually loved shooting this particular game not because it was a consolation round game but more for the fact that no one was there to watch. I was the only shooter at the game and the stands were open to different angles. Enjoy.

State volleyball in Denver this weekend. I was covering it for the Longmont Daily Times-Call. The light was not so great which explains my need for converting these two images. I got to the event and learned that I had not gotten a credential through the high school sports association in Colorado this year. What a problem that turned out to be but with some smooth talking I found myself down on the floor shooting where I wanted to. Lesson learned.
